The Best Sites to Find Remote Work

Best Remote Job Sites to Help You Break Free from the Office

Do you work in an office? Are you daydreaming about change and ready for a refresh? One of the most frequently asked questions in our online community is, “How can I find a remote job?” Freelance and remote work allow you to have both an income and autonomy over your time without the hassle of having to go into an office everyday.

Nowadays, companies are more open to location-independent employees. If you have a skill or position that you can transfer from an office to online then you are on the right path. If you are looking to gain online skills, check out our post about
online learning sites that can help you build skills for remote work.

Are you ready to make the transition from an office job to a remote position?

What is Remote Work?

A remote job is any type of position that allows you to work outside of a traditional office. This includes working from home, working from a cafe or coworking space, or our personal favorite, working while traveling the world. The beauty of remote work is that it gives you the flexibility to work from wherever suits you and your lifestyle!

How Does Remote Work, Work?

If you’re new to remote work, you’ll quickly see that remote positions come in all shapes and sizes: hourly, salary, part-time, full-time, freelancer, employee, self-employed, location- and time zone-independent (or dependent), and ranging from entry-level to highly skilled. All of these options make the digital nomad lifestyle a possibility. You don’t need much to start, just a reliable WiFi connection.

Can your current position be done from anywhere? If so, it’s certainly worth asking your employer if working remotely is an option, but make sure you do your homework before starting a conversation.

If you’re ready to pull the plug and jump into something new, check out these tips on how to untether your life and work from anywhere. And if you need some tips on how to adjust, focus, and stay productive once you start working from home we’ve got you’ve covered!

Where Should I Start Looking for Remote Work Opportunities?

The number of remote job sites is endless, making it hard to know where to start and which sites are worth your time. I’ve read blog posts about finding remote work that list every remote job site out there. I’ve found that this isn’t very helpful, since you waste a lot of time searching through sites that bring little value.

We decided to do the homework for you and compile our list of the best sites to help you find your first remote gig. You’ll find opportunities for all levels of experience and skill sets. Keep in mind that location-independent opportunities are highly competitive, so do not get discouraged if you do not hear back when you first start applying. Keep at it!

Best Remote Work Job Sites

Working Nomads
While this site leans heavily towards technical positions, it also provides a wide range of job categories—marketing, health care, legal, education, finance, and more. Each category has a good amount of job listings and they seem to add new opportunities daily. To stay on top of new positions, you can sign up to receive daily or weekly job alerts in your field of interest.

We Work Remotely
We Work Remotely may not have as large of a selection as some of the other job sites on this list, but they do have quality positions. There are a lot of technical positions, as well as opportunities for customer support, marketing, design, copywriting, and management. I interviewed for a position that I discovered through their daily job alert email. Signup on their homepage.

Angel List
A She Hit Refresh favorite! I found my second remote position via Angel List. This is the place to go if you are looking to work for a quality startup or tech company that will pay a satisfying salary. If you are in one of the following fields, you should take a look: software engineer, designer, sales, marketing, operations, management, and law.

Jobspresso
Jobspresso says they are “the easiest way to find high-quality remote jobs in tech, marketing, customer support and more.” To ensure the quality of the positions, each job is handpicked and reviewed by their team. The site allows you to search for full-time, part-time, contract, and freelance positions. In addition to job hunting, you can also post your resume in order for employers to discover you.

Remote.co
This site also hand curates their job list to ensure that they offer the “best remote job opportunities in the most-recruited job categories.” While updated frequently, the amount of positions available is limited.

Remote Work Hub
The majority of the jobs on this site are long-term or permanent roles in tech. Remote Work Hub screens all employers and every job to verify their authenticity. They offer a free basic membership and a premium membership allowing you access to all jobs, job alerts, and also a resume review. The site is updated daily with hundreds of jobs added each week.

Remotely Awesome Jobs
This is a remote job aggregate that claims to crawl more sites than all the others. The majority of listings are tech jobs, but there are a few quality non-tech postings. The site is updated daily and you can set up daily and weekly job alerts.

Outsourcely
Outsourcely helps startups fill long-term positions with remote workers. There’s just about something for everyone: sales, marketing, customer service, writing, administrative, webs development, and design. The job board is updated daily, with a few new jobs in each category added each day. You’ll need to create a profile to access full job details.

Power to Fly
Power to Fly is a job site with a mission to encourage gender diversity in the workplace, particularly in technical roles. They work with Fortune 500 companies and startups that want to address gender parity in the office. Power to Fly is dedicated to helping women find their dream job, whether that is in an office, flexible, or remote.

Jobbatical
This site is not a remote job site, but rather a relocation platform. Jobbatical “matches you with companies who are committed to relocating the best talent.” If you are looking for a career abroad, this might be a good place to start. It seems like the majority of positions are available in Malaysia, Estonia, the Netherlands and the U.S.

Remote Freelance Opportunities

Online Writing Jobs
Finally a site for the non-techies! This is a must-see site for writers. All of the listings are handpicked quality jobs that come from various “job aggregators, large and small job boards, career sites, recruiters, companies, and staffing agencies.” Online Writing Jobs is updated daily, with 10-15 new listings posted each weekday. You’ll find hourly and per assignment rates.

Toptal
Toptal is an exclusive freelance job site that is only interested in “la creme de la creme.” Seriously, fewer than 3 percent of applicants are selected. They match companies with talented developers, designers, and finance experts. In order to access their network you’ll have to go through a rigorous screening process. However, if you are chosen you’ll have the opportunity apply for some top-paying coveted positions.

ProBlogger
Another site for writers and bloggers. ProBlogger started as a site for bloggers and aspiring bloggers to find advice, tips, and tutorials. You can still find endless information on how to start a blog, create content, and grow your blog. We’ve included this site because they also have a job board for freelance, full-time, and part-time writing gigs. Updated daily, you’ll find blog, article, and copywriting opportunities.

Upwork
Love it or hate it, Upwork is one of the most popular remote job sites out there. Infamous for “cheap labor” Upwork has thousands of job listings to choose from that are updated by the minute. Given my personal experience with the site (this is where I scored my first remote job!) we think it’s a great place to start, build your resume, or find freelance work. It might take a while to find the right gig for an honest wage, but keep at it and don’t give up.

Flexjobs
This is a subscription-based site that gives you access to hand-screened remote, part-time, freelance, and flexible jobs. Flexjobs has a large selection of opportunities that are updated daily, and span any job field you can imagine. I tried this site but didn’t have much luck, however I know people who have. Check online for a discount code before signing up.

Hubstaff Talent
This site lists job offerings from remote startups, software companies, agencies, and ecommerce businesses. They cover a wide variety of fields and update their listings daily. While taking a cursory look, we noticed a lot of low-paying hourly positions, but it may be a good place to get your foot in the door.

Freelancer
Freelancer is a popular site but works a little differently than most of the sites on this list. As the name implies, the site offers freelance gigs, but in order to apply for a project you must bid on it. Employers then select the best candidate based on skills and price. They have jobs available for all skill levels in technical, professional, and creative fields.

CloudPeeps
Another freelance job site open to talented freelancers of all experience levels. CloudPeeps’ focus is not long-term employment; when we asked them to define their purpose, they said their platform is “best suited to full-time professionals running a freelance business.”

You can sign up for free, however you must have a subscription to see the detailed job board and to apply to listings. I was given a free trial promo code, check with them directly.  They’ve got a full spectrum of fields including graphic design, web development, social media management, and content marketing and have placed freelancers with big companies like Airbnb, L’Oréal, Zappos, and Lyft.

Guru
Guru reminds us of Upwork. It’s a freelance job search site and their mission is to “help skilled individuals around the world find work opportunities regardless of location.” You’ll find a variety of fields to choose from and projects with hourly and fixed prices.

Freelance Wave
Freelance Wave is a new site but already has 15,000 subscribers. All of their listings are either hand-curated or posted directly by an employer. Most of the positions listed are tech-related, however if you keep looking you may find some creative opportunities. It doesn’t seem to be updated frequently but that could change as the site grows.

Hi Naven! Thanks so much for stopping by and for the kind words. Likewise, keep up the great work!

  2. Hello ladies! Cepee and Annette, I love the ideas you have shared and the inspiration you have paid forward! I am a woman over 30 and working remotely for the last 5 years. I feel very lucky to have fallen into the opportunity when I had to figure out how to earn income and have a flexible schedule. The need for this arose when I got divorced and my child was only 3 at the time. I found a really amazing freelance writing opportunity and I hope you don’t mind if I share it here? The company is Ultius, Inc. and they contract writers who are based in the US. As a writer with them, I work with clients who need help with their own writing and I proof read their work for grammar, proper use of English, etc. It is a great opportunity so I just want to sort of get the word out. Thank you, again, for this awesome site and post! 🙂

    1. Hi Emily! Thanks so much for stopping by and for sharing the freelance writing opportunity with our audience. Congrats on finding a way to remote work, it can take a bit to find a remote job but once you get one it’s hard to ever go back to an office. 🙂

  3. While it was nice to see a compiled list, this is very targeted at tech workers and lacks any search sites beyond those for primarily developers and tech workers. I’d love to see one that perhaps offers a more robust and well-rounded list of remote work resources for all fields. Even naming this article, “The Best Sites to Find Remote Work for Tech and Start-up Workers” would have saved me the hour of clicking through every resource only to find 1-2 positions in a field outside of tech.

    1. She Hit Refresh

Hi Kathryn, thanks so much for taking the time to check out our article and for the feedback. While some of companies listed mainly list tech positions, most of the companies on the list are much broader and have many positions in marketing, sales, communications, customer service, HR and administrative roles. We purposely chose companies and FB groups that were not only tech based as we understand many people who are looking for remote jobs have other skills. Feel free to take another look, here are just some of the sites we listed that might be worth checking out https://weworkremotely.com/, https://angel.co/, https://online-writing-jobs.com/, https://www.upwork.com/ab/find-work/domestic, https://remote.co/remote-jobs/, https://www.flexjobs.com/.
